BRIG Position Papers Consultation: February 2024

On 25th May 2022 (second anniversary of the racist murder of George Floyd) BRIG hosted the first Birmingham Race Impact Summit and launched the development of a City wide “Birmingham 10 Year Race Equality Delivery Plan”.

The task ahead of us was to stage thematic (Criminal Justice, Education, Employment, Health and Housing) summits in producing position papers exploring what has happened and can be learnt from the Past. What does the Present tell us from lived experience and evidenced data, where it exists, leading to what needs to change in making targeted recommendations, as a call to action, for the Future. We asked for three recommendations spanning a decade: short term (1-3 yrs), medium term (4-7 yrs) and long term (8-10 yrs), with one being pivotal in shifting the dial in the next two years.

Such was the response that we ended up collaborating on hosting 12 thematic summits including: Arts, Environment, Further Education, Sport, VCFSE (Voluntary, Community, Faith, Social Enterprise) and young people.

We aim to publish the 10 Year Birmingham Race Equality Delivery Plan on 21st March 2024 (UN Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination). Before that, we need your feedback during February on the position papers and the recommendation being put forward to the 10 Year Plan. All draft position papers can be accessed here from the end of January, some will be posted before that. Please get back to us by sending us your views at info@wearebrig.co.uk

The Education - Schools Position Paper will be holding a consultation Zoom on 31st January 2024: 6 - 7.30 p.m. We would especially like to see community members, parents, school governors and educators at this event. Register your place here.

More information about the Education Position Paper can be found here.
