Seeking the Pioneers! BRIGs monumental Heritage Lottery Project
Two years in development, we have sought and received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which means BRIG can start our extraordinary task of Seeking the Pioneers of activism here in Birmingham.
In this 2-year project we will identify and celebrate our spectacular history of anti-racist activism within our communities. We will teach young people how to collect and present oral history of these glorious “pioneers” who have together shaped the world we now inhabit.
We have within our living memory, a rich and colorful history, and it is in grave danger of being lost! There is a plethora of inspirational stories of activism and activities designed to unite people in the fight for racial justice, still out there.
There have also been so many projects supposedly designed to address racism in the public realm, some of which have had monumental impact others have done more harm than good. There is still much to do but by teaching our people about our past, we are equipping them for the future.
Our heritage is in danger. It needs to be identified, captured, recorded, and preserved. It needs to be found if we are to learn from or build upon this legacy.
This is a monumental project!
This project intends to capture them all, so we can all learn from the good, the bad and the downright ugly!
Here in Birmingham, there have been significant movements led and promoted by the most unlikely of individuals.
These are the heroes and heroines upon whose shoulders we stand – it’s time they were acknowledged.
This is our history.
