Saris of Strength

Commemorating the biggest strike led by South Asian women workers in the UK, desiblitz will be screening 'Saris of Strength and The Power of Unity' at the University of Birmingham.  The documentary tells the story of the Grunwick Strike which began in 1976 and lasted two years, inspiring mass picket protests and generations of activists in Britain. It looks at the striker's fury at what they described as being “treated as animals rather than human beings” and their campaign for dignity and justice.

The screening will be followed by a special panel conversation. This includes Raghib Ahsan and Balwinder Rana who joined the Grunwick picket line, Professor Sundari Anitha, author of “Striking Women” as well as prominent members of Birmingham Black Sisters and the Indian Workers Association

Date/Timings: Saturday 21st June, 1.30pm-3.30pm

Venue: Carrol Lecture theatre, (G15) Muirhead Tower (next to the cafe)

Exhibition:  An exhibition marking the history & desiblitz art bus will be outside on the Green.
