Race Equalities Taskforce

The West Midlands Race Equalities Taskforce is an independent group established by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to tackle race inequality and promote fairness in the region, where 45% of the population identify as non-White British. The Taskforce, comprising leaders from diverse sectors, was created to address systemic inequality and improve opportunities for all communities.

After its formation in Spring 2022, the Taskforce spent its first year developing Race Forward, a strategic plan identifying key areas of inequality and actions to drive change. This plan was approved by the WMCA Board in March 2023 and launched at a community event in Sandwell in September 2023, where local leaders voiced their support and shared additional priorities.

Since the launch, the Taskforce has entered its delivery phase, working towards the objectives outlined in Race Forward and addressing community-identified priorities.

“It was an honour to have the opportunity to present and share with you at the BRIG Summit what the Race Equalities Taskforce ('RET') has been focused on and doing. I committed to sharing the progress report that covers the period from when the RET moved to action and delivery - this covers the period September 2023 to September 2024. Whilst I lead, a report will be issued annually. It is important that we are accountable to our region and that we are transparent as possible about where we have made headway and where there is much more to be done.

The front of the report provides key highlights and the back of the report a breakdown of actions by policy and where we are against these. We are on a journey together. We are stronger together. Unity.

Your feedback most welcome.

Best wishes for the festive season.
